Pacific Ocean and Cannon Beach - Viewed from Ecola State Park, OR. On January 10, 1806, the Indians reported that a whale had washed ashore at today's Cannon Beach. When Clark and his party got there, nothing was left but the skeleton. They were fortunate enough to purchase 300 lbs. of blubber and some whale oil from the Indians. On March 23, 1806, the men left Fort Clatsop for the return trip to St. Louis.
